  1. A silicon chip is an integrated circuit with 
  2. microscopically small electrical components 
  3. on a piece of silicon crystal only a few 
  4. millimetres square. One may contain more than 
  5. a million components. A chip is mounted in a 
  6. rectangular plastic package and linked via 
  7. gold wires to metal pins, so that it can be 
  8. connected to a printed circuit board for use 
  9. in electronic devices, such as computers, 
  10. calculators, television sets, car dashboards, 
  11. and domestic appliances.
